Cachi

Wanna go to a dinky little town in the mountains? Yes? Then come with us on our day trip to Cachi!

We got picked up at the hostel on our Spanish speaking tour. The rest of the tourists were all middle aged or older Argentines, and apparently they like to move at a slow pace.

The drive out was quite scenic. Northwestern Argentina is full of Quebrada’s, which are dry riverbeds in mountain valleys. The rivers fill up quickly during a rainstorm and flash flood. They also carry water in the rainy season. Otherwise, they remain very small streams.

We ventured up one of these Quebrada’s, watching the landscape slowly go from lush greenery to red mountains. We stopped at a couple viewpoints, where there were little food markets with many free samples. They all had llama sausage and cheese. Both good. There was also a massive spice booth, where Cam proceeded to food nerd out for 20 minutes looking at all of the options. She eventually settled on a Chimi Churri blend to take with us. We think we stopped so much cause of all the small old people bladders. There was always a line for the bathrooms.

The town of Cachi is very small, and honestly, we’re unsure why it appears on so many northwestern Argentine itineraries. The rest of our tour group had lunch on the main restaurant strip and that was it. We went for a walk around the entire town. Still cool, but presumably like any other town in this area. Maybe were wrong. Lunch was some yummy stuffed peppers and a potato tortilla.

We again stopped on the way back cause bladders, but made it back to Salta fine. A decent day trip. Time well spent, and it wasn’t too expensive. But were not tired of red mountains yet, we have another trip back into the range coming up. See you there!

  1. Sounds like a leisurely bus tour. You know that the ‘small old people bladders’ comment may come back to haunt you in a couple decades! There is so much desert. It is remarkable how they can pull off all the spices and foods. Cactus Camryn is adorbs!!

  2. Sounds like an easy tour, yourselves deserve a more leisurely pace. Looks like something out of the scenic retro old west, keep trekking.
