Short and sweet, we had two quick nights in Buenos Aires. We spent them relaxing and recovering as much as possible, and running a couple quick errands.
The vibe was different this time though. Last time we were in BA, Javier Milei had just been elected as the new president of Argentina. He promised sweeping economic reforms. This time, he had been inaugurated, and in his first week launched massive banking and economic policies.
The result of this was that the community was very tense. People were not out a lot. Businesses were a little tighter on their prices. Argentine Peso inflation was 10-20% over the month that we were away. This was not the cheery city that we had visited prior.
Another reason for the uneasiness was a massive storm that had swept through two days prior. 150km/h winds ripped through the city, killing one woman when a tree branch fell on her. Elsewhere in Argentina, 13 people had died due to the storm after a sports stadium roof collapsed. All sorts of branches were in tidy little piles along the sides of the roads, ready to be picked up at later dates. Massive complete trees stumps had fallen, and their logs lay beside chopped up so traffic could pass.
The one nice bit was a little food market we came across. We picked up some nice trail mix for our flight, and a big fruit smoothie. Dinner was at a nice Vietnamese joint, good spring rolls, good vemacelli. It got us excited for the future in Asia.
Not much else to report. One more flight, and were off to the jungle. We will see you there!
Safe travels!
BA makes one appreciate the value of having a hard $ currency in your pocket & bank account. Nice place to visit, might not want to live there!
